Our Objective
The Foundation’s primary goal is to gain ownership of selected historically significant vessels; to preserve, rehabilitate or restore them to working condition; and to place them on public display, not only dockside at our museum site, but also in operational use in educational and outreach programs around the Great Lakes. In addition to the vessels, the Foundation is currently negotiating the acquisition of a large waterfront industrial site in a yet-to-be-announced Great Lakes port. Examples of potential sites include grain elevators, ore docks, and old mill properties. These large facilities will provide a mooring area for the entire museum fleet, as well as nearly endless indoor space for displays, archives, museum offices, and small craft restoration and repair shops. The dock structures, well worthy of preservation in their own right, will provide a proper historical context in which to display many of our vessels. We envision a place where people can learn about different vessel types; the skills of the people who built, maintained, and operated them; the infrastructure that supported them; the evolution of maritime technology; and the role of the shipping industry in the history and development of the region. Combined with the Foundation's growing vessel collection, the new dock site will form the basis of what will undoubtedly become one of the premier maritime museums in North America. |
